Integrating Online Resources and Weblogs in the Teaching/Learning of

Abundant resources are available online in every aspect of teaching and learning of Chinese language. Effective use of online resources can improve the teaching/learning of Chinese at all levels. This workshop will introduce some of the web resources, such as online Chinese dictionary, Chinese input system, listening and speaking podcasting, etc. It helps solve some of the issues we have in teaching/learning Chinese.

Weblogs are newly developed online communication platform. They become quite popular. Weblogs can contain texts, pictures, video and music. Youngsters use weblogs. How can we integrate this hot platform into our teaching of Chinese language and make it a useful tool to improve students’ language skills? This workshop will demonstrate step by step the setup of the weblogs and the implementation of the weblogs in classroom teaching. Comparison of different weblog sites will be discussed. Weblog resources will be shared. Participants will have opportunity to create weblogs of their own during the session and bring them to the classroom. Online resources can not solve all the problems in teaching Chinese language. Definitely you can have a lot of fun. Let’s have fun .

网络为中文教学提供了丰富的教学资源。有效利用网上资源可以提高各级中文教学的质量。本讲座将介绍一些十分有用的工具,如网上中文字典,中文输入,听说播客网站等等。
博客是一种新颖的网络交流平台, 简单易用, 已相当普及。博客可包含有文字, 图片, 声频和视频的文件。学生们也在使用。 如何将博客引进到我们的中文教学中, 使它成为提高学生语言技能的一个工具? 本次讲座将为大家演示博客的设置, 与课堂教学的应用。 同时也将讨论不同的博客网站的选用, 以及展示网上的博客资源。 与会者有机会创建自己博客, 并带回课堂教学中去。

Newbies at NYSCATE Conference


As a strong believer of bridging gap of digital divide, I am so excited to see many new approaches in classroom teaching using technologies or sometimes just those new "babies" at the NYSCATE Conference at Albany.

1. Ms.Linda Brandon from Lakeland CSD, introduced an application of using ipod as a teaching and learning tool with podcasting. Many students have ipod. Why can't they use this device in their learning? This approach is particularly applicable to ESL or language classes. Students can broadcast their own audio files. It is an exciting tool for both teachers and students. However it takes some guts to try in classroom teaching as educator.

2. Some exibitors at the conference show some nice equipments for classroom teaching. One small device is to connect multiple keyboards to one computer. Multiple users use one computer. This setup encourages the co-oporative learning style among students. They can write together, work on the project together. It makes group learning more efficient.

3. Another vendor demonstrates a software which reads highlighted text on the screen. Spelling is part of the program. It features with a dictionary. Web pages and online content can be applied too.

4. "My Access" is an online student essay scoring program. It scores by rubrics aligned with national and state satardards. Teachers can make comments on essays. Data can be collected afterwords. It provides data with great accuracy and convenience to teachers.

How to align text to flow around an image
Designers often want to have text flow around images on the page. If alignment is not set properly, however, the text can appear on top of or below the images. To create this flowing alignment, you will set the alignment for the image, not the text. The steps below show how to align text to flow to the left side of the image.
Aligning text to flow on the side of an image
Select an image in the Document window. The Property inspector will change to the image Property inspector.
On the Property inspector, click the Align pop-up menu and select Right. (The Align pop-up menu is in the upper-right corner of the Property inspector.)
Click in the Document window on the right side of the image. Type some text. The text will flow from the top of the image and down the image's left side.
